Library Information

Training Ship Rahaman is having a Central Library named as George Campbell Library to commemorate the endowment of Campbell Shipping Company. The Library was established in the year 1989 to meet the growing needs of the students, teachers, research scholars and book loving personnel. It is a two storey building having two main sections.

  • The acquisition section, technical section and the Circulation Section are located in the first floor to procure, process and to issue / return of books to students and other library members. Reprographic Service is also provided to the users in the first floor at the entrance of the library.
  • Reference Section-I containing text books and IMO documents, dictionaries, encyclopedia etc. is located in the first floor
  • Reference Section-II is placed in the ground floor which has the facility for reading newspapers, magazines and rare books.
  • The library has a huge collection of books (about 8,000 books) apart from journals, bound volumes, and rare books.
  • The library users community consists of teachers, research scholars, students, and non-teaching staff of the institution. In addition to this, it also serves some users from outside.
  • GC Library offers various library services through its professionally competent staff by using print and electronic resources. Access to e-contents is also made available to the academic community through various programs.
  • The belongings of the library are fully processed using popular technical tools like the 18th edition of DDC for classification and AACR–II for cataloging. The centrally exhibited library catalog is arranged alphabetically under three sections such as author, title, and subject for tracing each book by the library users.
  • The Library aims to develop a comprehensive collection of documents useful for the faculty, students, and research scholars in their education and research activities in the college.
  • To keep the academic community abreast of the latest developments and to provide them with updated information on all Maritime related topics and to ensure the highest level of user satisfaction.
  • To serve as a repository of the resources used for teaching and research.
  • To have reference books, journals, magazines, newspapers, periodicals etc. of general knowledge, current affairs, and development of all-round personality and communication skills to facilitate employability.
  • To assist the faculty members in pursuit of their research activities by providing required reference material to the best of their ability.
  • To collaborate with other institutions of national and international repute in positioning the GC Library as the leading platform for learning and research for the users on and off the campus.
  • To provide global access to retrieve information published worldwide in many disciplines in support of teaching, consultancy, and research.
  • Library functions on Open Access System and maintains records on Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). OPAC can be accessed throughout the campus in an internet environment using the URL tsr.appexonline.com.
  • Barcode system is available for fast check-in / check-out and stock taking of library books.
  • Library provides reference service for those who need help in finding information from the library resources.
  • Library provides service to students and staff for 12 hours i.e. from 08:30 am to 08:30 pm.
  • Current Awareness Service: The latest procurement of books are displayed under new additions option in Webopac.
  • Question Paper Bank: Students can access the previous year question papers in library computers.

The collection of library consist of both print and electronic. The various categories of resources encompass Text Books, Reference Books, Teaching Videos, Manuals, Ship Drawings, Articles, Project Reports, Standards, Reports, Online Journals, National and International Periodicals, Bound Volumes, E-Reports, Digitised Articles & Digitised Ship Drawings. The library is automated with library management software for various library functions. The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) can be accessed through LAN and Wi-Fi by the authorized users.

Infrastructure

Learning Resources

  • The Library is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities which include 10 nodes for Wi-Fi network in addition to wired connectivity.
  • Sufficient computers are dedicated for library users.
  • Resources like digital scanners, printers, photocopiers, and a surveillance system for security, etc. are available.
  • E-books & teaching videos are available for all faculties and students through web access.

TSR Library has the Library Committee, and it has 9 members, including the Chairman, Members, and Member Secretary (Librarian). Feedback from users is taken regularly. All initiatives are discussed in this committee before they are implemented. The meetings of the library committee are minuted and list the various activities that have been undertaken and the proposed action plans. The Library is managed by one Librarian and one Library Assistant.

Some significant initiatives during the past 5 years are summarized as under:

  • The library remains open 24x7 throughout the year, even on gazetted holidays.
  • The library catalogue is available, and subscribed e-resources can be searched from the Campus only.
  • Digital Resource Centre: The digitization project of the library is in progress.
  • The library provides a place for faculty and groups of students to work on their library learning-based assignments.
  • Reading Facilities: Sufficient separate reading places, including one exclusively for faculty and research scholars, are available.
  • The library has a total seating capacity of 60 readers.
  • The TSR library acts as a community library for the families of staff and faculty members and is a part of the Library, where books, newspapers, and magazines for children, grownups, and ladies are available and remains open from 08:30 A.M. to 08:30 P.M. on all working days.

    • E-books, e-journals, book catalogue, and library monthly bulletins are available for library users.
  3. Membership:
    • The library caters to faculty, staff, and students of the institutions on the Campus. Private local residents, professionals, institutions & industries, and alumni of the TSR can also become members of the Library for a nominal fee.
  4. Document Delivery Service:
    • Books, research papers/articles, and magazines which are not available in the subscribed e-journals, print journals, etc., are procured by the library on request. The library interacts with other libraries and agencies for procuring books.
  5. Library awareness:
    • To make faculty members and research scholars aware of ‘Resources & Services,’ the library conducts and organizes presentations in different departments from time to time. It publishes the monthly bulletin “Current Awareness Services” for TSR faculty and students.
  6. Collection Development:
    • This year i.e. during 2023-2024, ……… volumes of books have been added to the collection. During 2022-2023, ……….. volumes of books were added. During the financial year 2023-24, Rs……… lakh was spent on the purchase of books and Rs. …….. lakh on subscription to print and e-journals.
  7. Library Hours:
    • The library remains open for 12 hours throughout the week except Sunday. Library services are provided from 8.30 A.M. to 8.30 P.M. from Monday to Saturday.
  8. Book Loans:
    • During the reporting year, a total of ……….. books were loaned out to the members.
